Baking Bread with the Kids

We are a family that loves food.  Its especially nice when our children can participate in the preparation as well as the consumption of the food.  Believe it or not, they even help in the clean up after the preparation!  With some frequency we bake bread on the weekends. It’s a new activity for us in the last 6 months or so, and I’m thrilled about it.  It all started with Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day and a few basic tools.  One of our favorite recipies is the Oatmeal Bread – its crusty, hearty, and just a hint of sweetness.  The whole reason that we make bread with some frequency is that its dead easy.  Yep, baking bread can be very easy – and very rewarding.   Its so easy, that my 2.5 YRO helped this past weekend.

Tyler helps with the bread baking

Day Before:

  • combine warm water, salt, yeast, maple syrup etc.
  • add flour, oat bran, wheat bran and a couple other things in the mixer.
  • Rest on counter for 2 hours, put in fridge.

Day of (next morning):

  • Lightly grease (Pam) a loaf pan
  • Remove a 1.5 lb (grapefruit) chunk of dough, shape, put in pan
  • Rest for 1.5 hour
  • Preheat oven to 350, for 20 minutes
  • Put bread in oven, with 1 c. water in a broiler pan (for some steam)
  • Bake 40 minutes.
  • Let cool and enjoy

The whole point of the book is that its easy and fast to bake high quality bread. There is no kneading, no thing precise… just throw the ingredients together and bake later. It’s so easy that its hard to do it wrong.

hey duncan! my husband has recently gotten into breadmaking so you've inspired me to get that artisan bread book for him. it's kind of a valentines day present to myself – bc who doesn't love fresh bread!??!

    happy baking!!

    kimberly.

  3. Hi Kimberly- I think he's love it, unless he's hardcore already. Even then, there is certainly a spot for this easier method. Let us know how it goes! I'm also tempted to try their "Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes". And who doesnt love fresh bread? Exactly.

Tyler is adorable! I love it when you get kids involved in cooking or baking. Although it could get a bit messy, I love the look on their faces when the bread comes out of the oven.

We are definitely going to check out this book Duncan – sounds right up our alley! Thanks for the recommendation! Your boys are too cute – love the bread pics of the fam.

Was also going to mention that our family has made many homemade pizza doughs (I'm sure too many!) but I always thought bread was more complicated for whatever reason. Now I'm excited to check it out.

  7. Hiya Katy- Thanks for checking out the site, and for taking the time to comment! I love the book… its a great way to cook with the kids and to bring inexpensive and healthy food (not to mention warm and tasty!) into the home. A friend makes the pizza dough from here and loves it.

Coop and Ty showed Papa (Bob) how to make the Oatmeal bread today. I also made Rye Bread (cause I made Pastrami in the last week) too. Later this week will be French bread for Verna… (we are visiting them in florida).

The bread is amazingly simple. Let me know how it goes for you! Perhaps a pizza/bread family event is in our future…could bring our brothers too!
